The project goal was to design a summarized version of the City of St. Albert Smart City master plan document to share with external stakeholders.
The main design goal was to establish a hierarchy of information within a complex master plan to make it easy for the reader to navigate and understand. The booklet also had to instill the reader with confidence in the City’s methodology, and to invoke alignment of innovation with the City’s brand of sustainability.
The approach taken was to chunk information by borrowing design methods from UX and web design, such as aligning text similar to a drop-down menu format and presenting information as “cards”. A leaf icon was created to serve as a recurring visual and illustrative motif that reinforced the idea of the City’s brand. Vector illustrations were used to support messaging and represent intangible ideas or examples of possibilities, which are important when trying to demonstrate actions that come from a high-level government policy.
